JOB DESCRIPTION
The Family Law Paralegal provides high‑level legal and administrative support to attorneys handling domestic relations matters, including but not limited to divorce, child custody and support, spousal support, adoption, protective orders. This role requires exceptional attention to detail, emotional intelligence, discretion, and the ability to manage time‑sensitive matters involving highly confidential and often emotionally charged issues. The Family Law Paralegal plays a critical role in supporting clients and attorneys throughout all stages of representation while ensuring compliance with legal, procedural, and ethical standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Case Management and Legal Support
- Assist attorneys in all phases of family law matters.
- Draft, prepare, and proofread legal documents such as pleadings, motions, petitions, separation agreements, parenting plans, financial statements, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, correspondence, and court forms specific to family law proceedings.
- Maintain organized and accurate case files (electronic and physical).
- Track and manage court deadlines, filing requirements, discovery schedules, and case milestones; promptly notify attorneys of upcoming deadlines and required actions.
Client Interaction and Support
- Serve as a point of contact for clients, gathering information, responding to routine inquiries, and explaining procedural steps in a professional and empathetic manner without providing legal advice.
- Obtain, organize, and review sensitive client information, including financial records (tax returns, bank statements, retirement accounts), employment information, and custody‑related documentation.
- Handle emotionally sensitive situations with professionalism, tact, and confidentiality, recognizing the unique stressors associated with family law matters.
Discovery and Financial Analysis Support
- Assist with the preparation and review of financial disclosures, affidavits, and statements of net worth.
- Organize, summarize, and analyze financial documents for use in settlement negotiations, mediation, and trial.
- Prepare discovery binders, exhibits, document indexes, and summaries related to assets, liabilities, income, and expenses.
Court Filings and Procedural Responsibilities
- Prepare and file documents with family courts and related agencies, including electronic filing (e‑filing) and manual filings as required by jurisdiction.
- Ensure compliance with court rules, local procedures, and formatting requirements for family law matters.
- Coordinate service of process, scheduling of hearings, mediations, evaluations, and expert appointments.
Hearing, Mediation, and Trial Preparation
- Assist attorneys in preparing for hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and trials, including organizing exhibits, witness materials, trial notebooks, and other documentation.
- Coordinate logistics for court appearances, mediations, depositions, and client meetings, including scheduling, document preparation, and follow‑up tasks.
- Attend hearings or proceedings when required to provide on‑site support.
Administrative and Practice Support
- Track billable time and assist with time entry, expense reporting, and client billing in accordance with firm policies.
- Maintain confidential client information in accordance with ethical obligations and privacy requirements.
- Perform other administrative and legal support duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of family law procedures, terminology, and court rules.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, accurate, and well‑organized legal documents.
- High degree of emotional intelligence, professionalism, and discretion when interacting with clients in sensitive situations.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with complex financial and custody‑related documents.
- Ability to manage multiple cases and competing deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Proficiency with legal research tools, case management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a collaborative legal team.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum of 2–5 years of paralegal experience, with demonstrated experience in family law strongly preferred.
- Experience with family court procedures, financial disclosures, and custody‑related matters highly desirable.
